Eligible households that install rooftop solar can receive central government financial assistance. Here is how the subsidy works for homes.
1 kW system
₹30,000
Central subsidy at ₹30,000 per kW.
2 kW system
₹60,000
The first 2 kW earn ₹30,000 each.
3 kW system and above
₹78,000
₹60,000 for 2 kW plus ₹18,000 for the 3rd kW. Larger systems get the same cap.
- Up to 150 units a monthTypically a 1–2 kW system: ₹30,000 to ₹60,000
- 150 to 300 units a monthTypically a 2–3 kW system: ₹60,000 to ₹78,000
- Above 300 units a monthTypically above 3 kW: ₹78,000
Amounts are the central subsidy published under PM Surya Ghar for residential rooftop systems and may change. Any state or electricity-company benefits can differ by area, and approval and payout are decided by the government portal and your electricity company. PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana
Launched in February 2024 by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy to bring rooftop solar to one crore households by March 2027.

How to claim
From Application to Subsidy, Step by Step.
Register on the national portal
Choose your state and electricity company, then enter your consumer number and mobile number.
Apply for rooftop solar
Submit the application and wait for approval from your electricity company.
Install with a registered vendor
Select a vendor from the portal list and have the system installed on your roof.
Net meter and inspection
Apply for the net meter. After inspection you receive a commissioning certificate.
Receive your subsidy
Submit your bank details on the portal. The subsidy is paid directly to your bank account, usually within about 30 days.
Who can apply?
- An Indian citizen with a house and a roof suitable for solar
- A valid electricity connection in the household
- No earlier solar subsidy taken for this property
- Housing societies can also apply for common facilities, at ₹18,000 per kW up to 500 kW
